17th Century South Yorkshire Oak Backstool

17th century South Yorkshire oak backstool, the two scroll carved arched back to panelled seats over turned and railed under-frame.
 
English, circa 1660-1680
 
By repute the carved centre of the back rails represents the head of Charles I. This emblem was a covert way of sharing the owner’s support for the Crown and the Royalist Cause.
