Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Originating in 18th-century France, Rococo pier mirrors were designed to hang on the wall space between windows to maximize natural light. They are characterized by asymmetrical curves, elaborate C-scroll crestings, carved foliate motifs, and parcel gilt finishes.

These frames were constructed using hand-carved softwoods, such as pine or linden, covered in gesso. The decorative detail was then finished with gold leaf gilding and hand-painted mineral pigments, while the mirror plate was made using mercury-amalgam glass.

Authentic pieces feature signs of hand-carving on the reverse, hand-planed timber backboards, natural distress to the gesso, and oxidisation or foxing on the glass plate. Modern reproductions often use molded resin rather than carved wood under the gesso.

A large French pier mirror can be rested against a focal wall in a hallway or drawing room to create vertical proportion. Pairing painted gilt frames with minimalist modern furniture creates a balanced contrast between historic craftsmanship and contemporary lines.

Dust the frame gently using a dry, soft-bristled brush, avoiding liquid cleaners which can dissolve gesso and gold leaf. Clean the mirror glass carefully using a soft cloth lightly dampened with water, ensuring liquid does not seep behind the frame edge.
