This large antique French Louis XV style mirror dates from 1850 and is finished in original two tone gold leaf with visible red bole and white gesso underneath, complemented by an arched top and a panelled back. The frame includes a prominent rocaille crest at the top centre, acanthus leaf scroll mouldings on the upper corners, and a beaded inner trim surrounding the glass. The original bevelled mercury glass displays areas of black patination alongside a distinct worn patch on the backing near the right-hand bevel. Measuring 198 cm high, 115 cm wide, and 10 cm deep, the mirror functions well above a substantial mantelpiece in a principal reception room to introduce brightness and depth.

Louis XV style mirrors are defined by French Rococo design elements, including asymmetrical curves, elaborate shell motifs, acanthus leaf carvings, and arched upper profiles.

These mirrors were constructed from carved timber framing overlaid with plaster or gesso, coated in red clay bole, and finished with leaf gilding over reflective glass panels.

Authentic period examples feature hand-carved timber backboards, evidence of red bole showing through worn gilding, and subtle oxidation or light foxing within the glass mirror plate.

A large gilded mirror can be styled as a focal point above a fireplace mantelpiece, positioned in an entryway, or leaned against a neutral wall in a contemporary living room to reflect light.

Preserve giltwood frames by dusting gently with a soft dry brush, avoiding liquid cleaners or abrasive solvents that strip gold leaf, and maintaining consistent humidity levels.
