Large Scale 19th Century English Regency Giltwood Overmantel Mirror.

This mirror is a lovely example of a regency overmantel. Originally designed to sit over the top of a chimneypiece. It has complex mouldings to the two pilasters and the horizontal top section, all incorporating reeded motifs of varying heights and scales. The two top corners also have finely carved and applied floral paterae. It is of large and impressive scale and its clean lines seem remarkably modern in many ways.

The best regency designers have been described by modern design historians as modernists in their outlook and this piece is a perfect example of that sort of thinking, creating a piece that, though antique, is almost timeless.

Regency mirrors were produced during the early 19th century, characterized by architectural neoclassicism inspired by ancient Greek and Roman designs. Typical features include reeded frames, corner rosettes, architectural pilasters, and water-gilded wooden surfaces.
