FAQs

Neoclassical mirrors from the early 19th century draw heavily on classical Greek and Roman architectural motifs, featuring symmetrical lines, column pilasters, and friezes decorated with urns or floral garlands.

These frames are typically constructed from carved softwoods or hardwoods, coated with layers of gesso, and meticulously finished with fine gold leaf applied over a bole base.

Authentication involves examining the mirror plate for silver oxidisation, hand-beveled edges, and minor distortions, alongside inspecting the construction joints and hand-carved gesso details on the wooden frame.

Maintain giltwood frames by gently dusting with a soft, dry brush, avoiding all chemical cleaners, and keeping the piece away from direct sunlight and high humidity to protect the fragile gold leaf and gesso.

An antique pier mirror creates a striking focal point when mounted above a sideboard or console table, reflecting natural light and contrasting effectively against minimalist or contemporary walls.
