A pier glass mirror is a tall, narrow mirror originally designed to hang on the pier, which is the wall section located between two windows. Originating in the late 17th century and prominent throughout the 18th century, these mirrors served to reflect natural light deeper into traditional interiors.

Traditional pier glasses from this era were constructed using pine or lime wood foundations overlaid with gesso and gold leaf through a process known as water gilding. The mirror plates were created using hand-blown glass coated with a mercury-tin amalgam backing, framed by hand-carved architectural mouldings.

Authentic period pieces feature hand-carved timber joinery, slight irregularities on hand-cut bevelled glass plates, and authentic gilding wear that exposes underlying red or grey clay bole. Additionally, examining the backboard reveals natural timber shrinkage, oxidisation, and historical hand-forged nails.
