These 1900 Thonet and Viennese bentwood armchairs are constructed from beech with a dark brown finish and stand on turned legs. Each chair has a curved cresting rail, sweeping armrests, and a circular padded seat covered in blue velvet with gimp braid trim along the edge. The chairs present a gentleman's library design vibe with steam-bent timber motifs. The dealer states the pair is in sturdy condition with recently reupholstered seat coverings. Measuring 84 cm high, 61 cm wide, and 48 cm deep, these armchairs provide comfortable seating suitable for a study, living room, or home office. The open armrests and compact footprint allow the chairs to fit easily around a desk or in a reading corner. The practical proportions and sturdy construction make them suited for regular daily use in a traditional or transitional interior setting.

FAQs

Bentwood armchairs originated in the 19th century when designer Michael Thonet perfected the process of bending solid wood using steam. This innovation allowed for mass-produced, lightweight furniture characterised by elegant, sweeping curves.

Traditional bentwood chairs are primarily crafted from beech timber, which responds exceptionally well to steam bending. The frames are shaped in metal moulds and secured using metal screws and dowels, often finished with woven cane or upholstered seats.

Authentic pieces often feature paper labels or hot-stamped maker marks on the underside of the seat frame, such as Thonet or Jacob & Josef Kohn. Original examples display hand-bent timber sections, period-correct screw hardware, and subtle grain variations.

Bentwood armchairs function well as accent seating beside a reading desk or positioned around a contemporary dining table. Their curvilinear silhouettes provide visual contrast against clean, minimalist architecture and modern textiles.

To preserve bentwood chairs, maintain a stable humidity level and keep them away from direct heat sources to prevent the timber from warping or splitting. Dust the frame regularly with a dry microfibre cloth and clean upholstered areas with gentle, fabric-specific products.
