Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

An overmantel mirror, historically referred to as a chimney glass, is a large framed mirror designed specifically to be positioned directly above a fireplace mantelpiece. Originating in the late 17th century, these mirrors became architectural focal points in Georgian and Victorian interiors, designed to reflect light and expand visual space.

19th-century gilt mirror frames were constructed using carved softwood structures, such as pine, coated with layers of chalk-based gesso. Intricate ornaments were cast or hand-carved, after which thin sheets of real gold leaf were applied over a coloured clay base known as bole.

Authentic period gilt mirrors display natural surface wear, often revealing the underlying red or grey clay bole beneath thin areas of gilding. The reverse side usually features hand-sawn timber backboards secured with aged fasteners rather than modern staples or uniform plywood backing.

Positioning an ornate gilded mirror above a contemporary fireplace or modern console table creates a balanced contrast between historical craft and clean-lined architecture. Keeping surrounding wall colours neutral allows the golden tones and intricate moulding details to stand out without cluttering the room.

Gesso and gold leaf finishes should only be dusted lightly with a soft, dry microfibre cloth or fine feather duster. Avoid applying water, liquid polishes, or chemical cleaners, as moisture can dissolve gesso layers and strip delicate gilded surfaces.
