Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

An overmantel mirror is a large wall-mounted mirror specifically designed to rest or hang above a fireplace mantelpiece. Historically popular in 18th and 19th century French interiors, these mirrors reflect light and add architectural scale to reception rooms.

Traditional French gilt mirrors feature carved timber or molded gesso plaster applied to a wooden frame structure. The frame is finished with fine leaf gilding over a coloured clay base, surrounding mercury or silvered mirror glass.

Authentic period gilt mirrors show natural signs of age, such as slight wear to the gold leaf revealing the red or grey bole clay underneath. The reverse side typically features hand-planed backboards, while the glass may display light foxing or desilvering.

A French gilt mirror serves as a focal point when placed above a fireplace, console table, or sideboard. The contrast between detailed gilded carving and contemporary architectural lines creates textural interest within modern living spaces.

Dust the carved frame regularly using a soft feather duster or dry microfibre cloth, avoiding liquid cleaners which can dissolve water-gesso backing. Clean the mirror glass carefully by applying glass cleaner to a cloth rather than directly onto the surface.
