FAQs

Overmantel mirrors originated in the 18th century, designed specifically to hang above fireplace mantelpieces to reflect candlelight and brighten rooms before electricity.

Traditional construction typically involved a carved softwood or composition ornament base finished with applied gold leaf or gesso over a wooden frame.

Authenticity is often identified by hand-beveled glass showing slight oxidisation, foxing, joinery techniques at the corners, and the composition of the backing boards.

Pairing an ornate historical mirror with minimalist contemporary furniture creates a striking focal point, balancing traditional craftsmanship with clean lines.

Clean the gilded frame gently with a dry, soft brush to remove dust, and use a minimal amount of water or specialized glass cleaner on the mirror plate, avoiding contact with the fragile gilt edges.
