C18th Chinese Export Hardwood Corner Armchair; of an Eccentric and Curvaceous Design and Proportions

18th century
Description

Exceptional C18th Chinese export hardwood corner armchair; of an eccentric and curvaceous design and proportions; the horseshoe shaped top rail of exaggerated form being unusually angled and forming the outswept arms; raised on turned supports and solid well figured vase shaped splats; above the voluptuous shaped seat rail having a moulded edge, housing the green velvet upholstered drop in seat. The monumental cabriole front leg headed with a large finely carved lion's mask and terminating in a oversized ball and claw foot. The square section legs with a rounded facing edge, united by unusual turned and block stretchers.

These rare and highly desirable pieces of C18th Chinese export furniture were usually made from exotic hardwoods to English designs for the export market. This extraordinary chair has design influences of a George II Irish armchair possibly made under the guidance of an Irish cabinet maker.

Archival Detail
Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Chinese export furniture refers to items produced in China during the 18th and 19th centuries specifically for European markets, combining Western furniture forms with traditional Asian woods, joinery, and decorative carving.

These chairs were crafted from dense tropical hardwoods imported into or native to southern China, such as zitan, huanghuali, or rosewood variants, and typically featured drop-in upholstered seat frames.

Authentic pieces display traditional Asian blind mortise-and-tenon joinery, dense dark timber with natural weight, hand-carved motifs combining Western designs like cabriole legs with oriental mask details, and period hand-planing marks.

Position the chair as a sculptural accent piece in a study corner, alongside a sleek contemporary side table, or within an entrance hall to create textural contrast against minimalist wall backgrounds.

Keep the chair away from direct heat sources and sunlight to prevent timber shrinkage, apply a high-quality beeswax polish annually to protect the dark finish, and gently vacuum the velvet seat upholstery.
