Chippendale Style Giltwood Mirror

19th century
Sold 9 December 2025 · Moxhams Antiques
This “Chippendale Style Giltwood Mirror” found a buyer.

It was listed by Moxhams Antiques. Sold pieces stay on Sellingantiques as a record of what has passed through, and the next one is rarely far away.

Description

A fine early 19th century carved mirror in its original gilt. The intricate giltwood frame showcases the finest craftsmanship of the period, featuring ornate carvings of flowers, shells, rococo scrolls, acanthus leaves and a beautifully aged patina. The mirror plate, while still in fair condition, has some diagonal marks across the corners caused by the batons on the back that hold it in place.

Provenance: The mirror came from a house near Salisbury and although I don't believe it was from the 1760s, I would still be confident that it was made in the early part of the 19th century.

Date of Manufacture

Moxhams Antiques has dated this Chippendale Giltwood Wall Mirror to the Regency era.

The Chippendale style, popularised by cabinetmaker Thomas Chippendale in the 18th century, incorporates asymmetric rococo curves, intricate grotto motifs, Chinese fretwork, and Gothic tracery, often rendered in richly carved wood.

Traditional giltwood pieces are constructed from carved softwood or hardwoods like pine, coated in layers of gesso and bole, onto which extremely thin sheets of gold leaf are applied and burnished by hand.

Authentic period pieces typically feature hand-carved detailing with subtle tool marks, aged gesso showing micro-crazing, oxidised mercury or silvering on old glass plates, and historical construction methods on the wooden backing frames.

An ornate giltwood mirror serves as an effective focal point when contrasted against minimalist modern walls, neutral paint schemes, or paired simply above a contemporary console table to create visual tension.

Gilded surfaces are exceptionally delicate and should only be dusted lightly with a dry, soft ostrich feather duster, avoiding all chemical cleaners, water, and abrasive cloths to prevent lifting the fragile gold leaf.
