Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

George III giltwood mirrors, originating in the late eighteenth century, are characterised by hand-carved timber frames finished with water or oil gilding. These pieces frequently incorporate Rococo, Neoclassical, or Chippendale influence, displaying C-scrolls, acanthus foliage, and pierced crestings around a central mirror plate.

Frame structures were predominantly carved from limewood or pine before receiving layers of gesso plaster and a red clay bole. Thin leaves of gold were then applied over the bole, whilst the reflective glass was manufactured using a mercury-silvering process that oxidises distinctively over time.

Authentic period mirrors exhibit hand-carved backings with visible tool marks, hand-forged iron fixings, and natural oxidisation on pine surfaces. The gilding typically shows delicate rub-through to the reddish clay layer underneath on high points, accompanied by foxing and specks across the original mercury glass.

Positioning a carved giltwood mirror above a fireplace mantelpiece or console table creates architectural interest through historical contrast. Mounting the mirror opposite windows or artificial light sources maximizes reflective illumination across the surrounding space.

Dust gilt surfaces gently using a dry, soft camel-hair brush to prevent disturbing delicate gold leaf or flaking gesso foundations. Avoid water and commercial liquid chemical cleaners on gilded surfaces, applying spirit-based cleaners sparingly to the glass alone with a soft cloth.
