Description

Beautiful Japanese Meiji (19thC) Ryukyu Islands black lacquer keepsake box decorated with a high relief mother-of-pearl grasshopper. This lovely lacquer box is accented by the use of real ‘painted bamboo’, which has been incorporated on the top of the lid and all four sides of the box. Different hues of inlaid mother-of-pearl and raised outlines detailing the body of the grasshopper, give this motif a three-dimensional appearance, called tsuishu, or lacquerware with raised designs, and demonstrate the innovation of Ryukyu Shikki artisans. Measures 12cm (4.75in) x 10cm (4in) x 3.5cm (1 3/8in).

Excellent condition with no damage or repairs. A charming little box.

The Meiji period spans from 1868 to 1912, marking an era of intense modernisation and international exposure where traditional Japanese craftsmen combined centuries-old lacquer techniques with innovative artistic expressions for both domestic and global markets.

These items are typically constructed from a wooden base coated with multiple layers of refined tree sap resin, often embellished with mother-of-pearl inlay, metallic powders using the maki-e technique, and intricate carving.

Authentic pieces exhibit deep lustrous finishes from natural urushi sap, microscopic age-related craquelure or wear, meticulous hand-applied detailing, and traditional construction methods distinct from modern synthetic resin replicas.

Place the piece as a focal point on a coffee table, console, or bookshelf to introduce rich textural contrast, cultural history, and understated elegance to modern minimalist or eclectic spaces.

Keep lacquerware away from direct sunlight and extreme humidity fluctuations to prevent cracking, and clean only with a soft, dry, lint-free cloth without using chemical polishes or water.
