A Victorian invalids chair is a piece of medical furniture designed in the 19th century to assist individuals with mobility issues, often featuring mechanical adjustments and wheels.

These chairs typically utilised solid hardwoods such as birch, oak, or mahogany, often combined with cane webbing for the seat and back, alongside iron or brass mechanical components.

Authentic pieces generally exhibit period-appropriate joinery, hand-woven cane work, patinated brass or iron hardware, and functional mechanical ratchets or hinges characteristic of nineteenth-century engineering.

Such historical items function effectively as statement accent pieces in a study or library, highlighting industrial and utilitarian design histories within contemporary spaces.

Wood should be maintained with microcrystalline wax to nourish the grain, while cane panels require gentle dusting and occasional light moisture to prevent brittleness without damaging the fibres.
