Antique Victorian Carved Mahogany and Leather Armchair

19th century
Description

An exceptional antique Victorian carved mahogany and leather armchair. This was made in England, it dates from around the 1850-1870 period.

The quality is outstanding, this has to be one of the finest examples we have come across. The solid mahogany frame has exquisite carving throughout, including beautifully detailed carved lions heads on the arm rests. It stands on beautifully curved cabriole legs terminating in porcelain casters, this is a great size and it is extremely comfortable. It is upholstered in a gorgeous leather which has a beautiful colour tone and patina.

We have had the frame polished, the leather has been enhanced and revived by our leather restorer. The condition is excellent for its age with only some extremely minor wear.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Victorian leather armchairs typically feature dense hardwoods such as mahogany or walnut, robust leather upholstery finished with brass studs, and hand-carved decorative motifs along the frame.

Standard Victorian construction involved solid mahogany or walnut framework, coil spring suspension, natural hair or fibre padding, leather hide upholstery, and brass castors.

Authentic period examples display hand-carved joinery details, traditional mortise and tenon frame construction, hand-tacked upholstery studs, and period-appropriate brass or ceramic castors.

Position the piece alongside streamlined contemporary furniture, pair dark timber accents with neutral wall tones, or place it within a dedicated study or reading area.

Condition the leather periodically with specialised hide nourishment to prevent drying, polish mahogany frame elements with beeswax, and position the chair away from direct sunlight or heat sources.
