Large William IV Mahogany Library Chair

19th century
Description

A superb quality William IV mahogany library chair of unusually large size. The solid mahogany frame has good carved detail, scrolling arms and faceted Gothic style legs with brass engine turned front castors. It is upholstered in a beautiful maroon leather with buttoning on the back and seat and a studded edge.

The chair stands approximately 49" (125cm) high, 36" (91cm) deep and is 27" (69cm) wide across the arms. The seat is approximately 19" (48cm) high.

The chair is in good condition for its age and has developed a lovely patina. There are some signs of age and use, some minor marks and knocks and an old repaired chip to one front leg but nothing detrimental and it is strong and sturdy. The leather has worn beautifully and shows signs of age but there are no major damages or tears. The chair has been cleaned and gently polished and is ready for use.

Why Sellingantiques dated this piece to THE 19TH CENTURY:
Faceted octagonal front legs with turned collars: early nineteenth-century cabinet work.
Brass cup castors with gadrooned rims: period fittings secured with slotted screws.
Carved acanthus terminals on the arms: crisp hand carving in solid mahogany.
Creasing and surface wear across the leather: decades of natural patination.

This is an independent date report produced by Sellingantiques using its own proprietary system. The process uses the photographs shown on this page. The system is never told the date the dealer has declared. This report shows that the two dates corroborate.

This large nineteenth century library chair originates from the William IV period, formed from solid mahogany with a polished warm brown finish and a maroon leather upholstery featuring button-tufting and brass studding. The piece incorporates carved scroll armrests, faceted Gothic-style turned front legs, and brass engine-turned front castors. Practical dimensions measure 125 cm high, 69 cm wide, and 91 cm deep, with a seat height of 48 cm. The frame displays an aged patina with minor marks, knocks, and an old repaired chip to one front leg, while the leather shows natural wear without major tears. Placed in a study or a traditional library, the chair functions as a practical seating option suited for a reading space.

The William IV style, bridging the Georgian and Victorian eras from 1830 to 1837, is characterised by substantial classical proportions, bold scroll carvings, turned legs, and rich mahogany woods.

These chairs were typically constructed with solid mahogany frames, hand-tufted hide leather upholstery, internal horsehair padding, and brass castors for mobility.

Authentic pieces feature heavy architectural silhouettes, carved lotus leaves or scroll design elements, turned legs, traditional deep-buttoning, and brass castors attached to tapered feet.

Pair the chair with minimalist modern shelving or place it alongside a contemporary floor lamp to create a reading nook that balances classical weight with modern lines.

Keep the piece away from direct sunlight and heat sources, apply specialised leather balm periodically to maintain flexibility, and wax the mahogany frame using natural beeswax.
