This large Regency convex wall mirror displays a round giltwood frame in a bright gold finish, enriched with prominent ball mouldings, detailed reeded ebonised slips framing the speckled glass, and layered decorative mouldings. A carved eagle cresting with spread wings perches upon a rocky base above a central plinth decorated with a carved shell motif, flanked by sweeping acanthus leaf scrollwork that cascades onto the top of the frame. The visible details encompass delicate beadings, turned spherical decorations inset into the concave section, and distinct shaping along the borders. Measuring 118 cm in height and 75 cm in diameter, this grand piece serves as a striking focal point above a mantelpiece in a formal living room, hallway, or dining space, reflecting light and adding architectural presence to an interior.

Convex mirrors gained widespread popularity during the British Regency period in the early 19th century. Designed to bounce ambient candlelight around a room, their curved glass allowed hostesses to observe the entire room and discrete servants without turning around.

Traditional Regency convex mirrors were constructed with hand-carved pine or composition frames coated in gesso and gold leaf (water gilding). The convex glass was set within an ebonised reeded inner slip to contrast with the bright gilded frame.

Authentic period pieces exhibit natural oxidisation and slight distortion in the hand-blown glass plate, along with wear to the water gilding revealing reddish bole underneath. Original backboards usually consist of dark pine planks held with hand-forged nails or sprigs.

Interior designers frequently position convex mirrors above a fireplace mantelpiece, dining room sideboard, or in a narrow entrance hall. The curved reflection creates visual depth while the gilded detail anchors classical and contemporary rooms alike.

Clean giltwood frames using a soft, dry camel-hair brush to gently remove dust without lifting the gold leaf. Avoid water, spray cleaners, or commercial polishes, as moisture dissolves water gilding and damages the underlying gesso.
