Why Sellingantiques dated this piece to THE 1920s:
Broad bevels on the mirror plates: early twentieth-century glass working.
Gilding rubbed on outer edges: natural wear from long domestic handling.
Dark spots near the lower edge: oxidisation of the silvering over time.
Carved timber cresting and flourishes: workshop revival work in the Georgian taste.

This is an independent date report produced by Sellingantiques using its own proprietary system. The process uses the photographs shown on this page. The system is never told the date the dealer has declared. This report shows that the two dates corroborate.

This large wall mirror exemplifies the Rococo Revival style, produced around 1920. The construction combines giltwood, gesso, and glass, presenting a bright gold finish throughout the piece. The intricate frame features prominent acanthus leaf carving, openwork scrollwork along the sides, decorative floral cresting at the apex, and beaded moulding framing a bevelled mirror plate with mirrored inserts. The item measures 97 cm high, 54 cm wide, and 5 cm deep. Suitable for placement above a mantelpiece or as a striking decorative wall mirror in a living area or hallway, the piece retains its original glass and shows very good overall condition. The ornate vertical silhouette brings a distinct French Chateau aesthetic to contemporary interiors.

FAQs

Rococo and French style giltwood mirrors are defined by elaborate, asymmetrical ornamentation, flowing C-scrolls, acanthus leaf carvings, and naturalistic crestings. Originating in 18th-century Europe, these designs emphasised lightness, movement, and dramatic light reflection through gilded surfaces.

Traditional giltwood mirrors feature carved timber frameworks, typically pine or lime wood, coated in layers of gesso plaster. Fine gold leaf is then applied over a coloured clay substrate called bole using water gilding or oil gilding techniques to achieve a polished finish.

Authentic period giltwood displays natural wear, showing the underlying red or grey clay bole through high points where the gilding has worn over time. Hand-carved wooden joinery, irregularities in the glass reflectivity, and signs of age on the timber backboard further confirm authenticity.

Positioning an ornate gilt mirror above a clean-lined modern console table or fireplace mantel creates an engaging contrast between historical detail and contemporary minimalism. The reflective glass and gold tones bring warmth, depth, and scale to neutral colour palettes.

Dust the gilded frame gently using a soft, dry camel-hair brush or microfibre feather duster without applying pressure. Avoid using water, liquid chemical polish, or glass sprays near the frame, as moisture can dissolve the water-soluble gesso and damage the delicate gold leaf layer.
