Rococo Revival emerged in the mid-19th century, drawing inspiration from 18th-century French Rococo design characterised by asymmetrical C-scrolls, acanthus leaves, shell motifs, and elaborate gilded ornamentation.

Antique giltwood frames were typically constructed from carved timber or moulded composition over wood, coated with gesso and clay bole, onto which thin sheets of gold leaf were applied and burnished.
