This Victorian overmantel mirror dates from around 1850 and is shaped from warm brown mahogany with a glass plate. The frame displays rounded shoulders at the top corners, a carved central cresting with scrollwork and a raised central circular motif, plus large acanthus scroll brackets at the lower sides resting on plain wooden feet. The timber exhibits natural grain variation and minor signs of age across the frame and the unpolished lower base support. Measuring 79 cm high, 122 cm wide, and 7 cm deep, the piece sits securely above a living room fireplace mantel or as a wall-hung dressing mirror in a bedroom setting.

Designed during the 19th century, overmantel mirrors were crafted specifically to sit atop a fireplace mantelpiece to reflect light and enhance room proportions.

These mirrors were predominantly constructed using solid hardwoods such as mahogany, walnut, or oak, often fitted with silvered or mercury glass plates and hand-carved architectural crestings.

Authentic period examples typically feature hand-carved scrollwork, original wooden backing boards, natural patination along the timber grain, and age-related foxing on the glass plate.

Position the mirror directly above a living room fireplace hearth or a wide hallway console table to anchor the room and distribute natural light.

Dust the mahogany frame regularly with a soft dry cloth, apply beeswax sparingly along the wood grain, and clean the mirror glass using a lightly dampened microfibre cloth without harsh chemicals.
