Strictly Vetted Dealers

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.

Secure Transit

Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.

The Sustainable Choice

Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

This Victorian overmantel mirror is fashioned from solid mahogany in a warm brown timber colour with a polished wood finish. The substantial rectangular frame incorporates an arched cresting at the top, enriched with deep foliate scrollwork, carved mascaron motifs, and a small turned finial surmounting the pediment. The vertical sides display elaborate relief carving including floral sprays and vines, while the lower corners feature distinct carved human faces framed by scrolling woodwork. The glass plate is set within layered mouldings that follow the contour of the upper arch. Measuring 139 cm high by 141 cm wide and 10 cm deep, the mirror requires secure wall anchoring above a fireplace mantel in a living room, dining room or hallway to reflect natural light and anchor traditional interior schemes.

FAQs

An overmantel mirror is a large wall mirror designed specifically to sit or hang directly above a fireplace mantelpiece, popularised during the 18th and 19th centuries to reflect light across living spaces.

These pieces were predominantly crafted from dense hardwoods such as solid or veneered mahogany, oak, and walnut, frequently featuring hand-carved ornamental elements and silvered glass.

Authentication relies on examining construction techniques, such as hand-carved frame joinery, original mirror plate foxing or grey spotting, and natural oxidation on unpolished rear timber panels.

Position the frame centrally above a structural fireplace surround or atop a low console table to draw the eye upwards and add historical context to contemporary living rooms or dining spaces.

Dust the hand-carved details gently with a soft dry brush, apply non-silicone beeswax sparingly to the timber surfaces, and clean the glass using a lightly dampened microfibre cloth to prevent moisture reaching the frame.
