Why Sellingantiques dated this piece to THE 19TH CENTURY:
Fine craquelure across the gilded arch: natural ageing of the gesso ground.
Lion mask holding fruit swags: popular Swedish Empire decorative motif.
Open seams at the arched moulding joins: slow shrinkage where wood sections meet.

This is an independent date report produced by Sellingantiques using its own proprietary system. The process uses the photographs shown on this page. The system is never told the date the dealer has declared. This report shows that the two dates corroborate.

This 19th-century Swedish pier mirror follows a Neoclassical style with a grand Regency aesthetic. The piece consists of a tall rectangular frame finished in gold and black, combining giltwood and ebonised wood with a glass mirror plate. The upper section displays an arched pediment incorporating ebonised swags, foliage carvings, and a central circular rosette motif, bordered by intricate mouldings. Down the sides, the rectangular mirror glass is flanked by vertical borders decorated with recurring leaf motifs, sitting above a lower plinth adorned with horizontal carved friezes and scrolled corner brackets. Measuring 155 cm high, 75 cm wide, and 12 cm deep, the mirror functions well when hung upon a narrow wall space in an entrance hall, living room, or hallway to add architectural presence and reflect light within the interior.

A pier mirror is a tall, narrow mirror designed to be placed on the pier, which is the section of wall located between two windows or above a console table. Originally created in the 17th century, these mirrors became prominent features in neoclassical and 19th-century interiors to maximise light reflection.

19th-century pier mirrors were typically constructed from carved timber frames coated in gesso, gold leaf gilding, and ebonised paint or lacquer. The reflective surfaces were traditionally fitted with mercury-backed glass or silvered float glass plates.

Authentic 19th-century Swedish mirrors often exhibit hand-carved wood mouldings, layered gesso under leaf gilding, and distinct neoclassical motifs such as swags and crestings. Examining the rear reveals hand-sawn timber backing panels and period-appropriate iron fixings or nails.

A pier mirror can be positioned on a narrow wall between architectural features, above a sideboard, or in an entryway to reflect incoming natural light. Its vertical proportions draw the eye upwards, enhancing ceiling height and adding structure to a living space.

Clean giltwood frames by dusting gently with a soft, dry microfibre cloth or dry soft brush to prevent damage to delicate gold leafing. Avoid liquid cleaners, polish, or damp sponges on gilded or ebonised surfaces, and clean the glass plate separately using a controlled damp cloth.
