FAQs

Convex mirrors, often known as optical or bankers mirrors, gained popularity during the Regency and Victorian periods for their ability to reflect a wide panoramic view of a room.

Many 19th-century decorative mirrors were crafted using cast iron frames, often produced by prominent foundries like Coalbrookdale, which were then heavily gilded or painted to resemble bronze or gold.

Authentication involves examining the backing boards, the composition of the metal or wood frame, hand-carved or cast detailing, and the presence of age-related oxidisation or foxing on the original mirror glass.

An antique convex mirror serves as a strong focal point and can be hung above a mantelpiece or on a narrow wall space to bounce light around contemporary living spaces while adding historical depth.

Dust the frame gently with a soft dry brush and clean the mirror glass sparingly with a microfiber cloth and a mild glass cleaner, taking care not to let moisture touch the fragile gilded surfaces.
