This small French neoclassical wall mirror dates to around 1800 and is constructed from giltwood, gesso and glass with an original boarded back. The rectangular frame holds original mercury glass and displays rich gold coloration. Elaborate decorative elements include a carved ribbon and laurel cresting at the top, beaded moulding running along the inner edges, and decorative corner rosettes. The gilt surface shows authentic signs of age with speckling on the glass plate. The piece measures 82 cm high, 53 cm wide and 5 cm deep. In a contemporary home, this compact wall mirror works well positioned above the mantel in a living room, drawing room, or hallway to add traditional character to the interior space.

French Louis XVI style mirrors are characterised by Neoclassical design elements inspired by antiquity, including symmetrical silhouettes, laurel wreaths, ribbon bow crestings, and beaded moulding around the frame.

These frames were typically constructed from carved softwood or hardwood coated with a gesso substrate, prepared with coloured clay bole, and finished with gold leaf using traditional water gilding techniques.

Authentic period pieces exhibit subtle signs of age such as visible red or yellow bole showing through worn gilding, hand-planked timber backing boards, corner joints consistent with period joinery, and natural foxing on the glass.

Interior designers frequently position French gilt mirrors above a fireplace mantelpiece, dining room sideboard, or hallway console table to introduce warm metallic tones and reflect light across contemporary spaces.

Maintain the frame by dusting gently with a soft dry brush or microfibre cloth, keeping liquids and chemical solvents away from the gold leaf, and placing the item in a room with stable humidity.
