Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.

Secure Transit

This large antique French bistro mirror dates from around 1830 and follows a classic nineteenth-century design. The timber frame wears a gold leaf finish over fluted moulding, revealing natural age patination along its rectangular profile, and holds original distressed glass within its boundaries. The construction allows for landscape or portrait hanging, supported by a replaced back made with old paper. Practical proportions span Width 94 cm x Height 140 cm x Depth 5 cm. Placement works well above a sideboard in a living room, dining room, or hallway, where the reflective surface bounces light around the space. The historic character complements both traditional and eclectic modern interiors as a functional wall accessory.

FAQs

Typically featuring clean rectangular profiles with linear or fluted moulding, bistro mirrors originated in 19th-century French commercial establishments to enhance light reflection and create visual depth.

These frames were constructed using timber substrate and gesso moulding, finished with water gilding or oil gilding techniques where delicate sheets of gold leaf were applied over a clay bole base.

Authentic pieces display natural wear to the gold leaf exposing the reddish or dark clay bole underneath, accompanied by original period timber backboards and silvering degradation or ghosting in the glass.

A large rectangular gilded mirror can be mounted horizontally above a sideboard or leaned securely against a primary wall to reflect natural light and anchor contemporary living areas.

Dust the gilded frame lightly using a soft dry brush, avoiding liquids or chemical detergents which dissolve gold leaf, while cleaning the glass with a slightly dampened microfibre cloth.
