Pair of Antique Ash and Elm Side Chairs

19th century
Description

An attractive pair of 19th century vernacular ash and elm side chairs with drop in seats newly upholstered in Zoe Glencross ‘Mottram Meadow Teal’ linen fabric. The chairs have nicely shaped backs and square legs with an internal chamfer.

A very nice pair of chairs - my photos don’t do them justice (I am struggling with lighting at the moment so will try and take some better photos when I can). They are simple but the curved shaped of the back rests gives them just enough detail to stop them being too plain. The fabric is a printed linen that has a lovely soft worn-in look.

Condition: Both chairs have some minor surface wear such as scuffs and scratches where they have been handled over the years. They are structurally very solid and are fully useable. The drop in seats are traditionally made and have been newly recovered.

Dimensions:

Width - 52cm

Depth - 51cm

Height - 95cm

Seat height - approximately 48cm

Why Sellingantiques dated this piece to THE 19TH CENTURY:
Wear across the front stretchers: years of resting feet.
Softened corners on the top rails: handling over generations.
Inner leg chamfers: typical 19th-century vernacular workshop detail.
Mortise joints with slight timber shrinkage: natural movement in country hardwoods.

This is an independent date report produced by Sellingantiques using its own proprietary system. The process uses the photographs shown on this page. The system is never told the date the dealer has declared. This report shows that the two dates corroborate.

Ladderback chairs emerged as a popular vernacular design in the 17th and 18th centuries across rural Britain and Europe. Characterised by horizontal back slats resembling a ladder, these chairs were produced by country turners and cabinetmakers using locally sourced hardwoods.

Regional country chairs were predominantly constructed from indigenous British timbers such as ash, elm, and oak. Ash was favoured for its flexibility in bent components, while durable elm was frequently selected for seat frames and structural elements.

Authentic period examples display hand-cut joinery, pegged mortise and tenon joints, and subtle irregularities in wood grain and turning. Wear patterns are typically visible on the stretchers where feet rested and around the corners of the back slats.

These versatile seating pieces can be placed around contemporary dining tables to add historic texture or used individually as desk and hall chairs. Reupholstering the seats in geometric or modern textiles bridges traditional craft with current decor styles.

Timber frames should be dusted regularly with a soft cloth and conditioned periodically with natural beeswax polish. Fabric drop-in seats should be cleaned using appropriate textile vacuum attachments or professional spot treatments.
