Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

This 1910 Chippendale and Georgian style Gainsborough library chair is constructed from mahogany with a dark brown timber finish and stands on cabriole legs. The high upholstered back and seat cushion feature a woven red and gold brocade fabric patterned with damask designs and botanical motifs, complemented by padded armrests supported on sinuous wooden arms. The front knees of the legs display intricate acanthus leaf carving, while the feet take a ball and claw form. Original upholstery remains in excellent overall condition. Suitable for use in a gentleman's library, a study, or a living room seating area, this armchair measures 104 cm high, 81 cm wide, 74 cm overall depth, with a seat depth of 56 cm and a seat height of 46 cm. It provides comfortable upright seating for reading or working at a desk.

Originating in eighteenth-century Britain, the Gainsborough chair is a broad-seated armchair featuring a tall upholstered back, open armrests, and exposed wooden framing. Named after painter Thomas Gainsborough due to its appearance in aristocratic portraits, it was crafted primarily for libraries and reading rooms.

Frames were predominantly constructed from solid mahogany, valued for its density and suitability for intricate hand carving. Upholstery traditionally incorporated horsehair padding over jute webbing, finished with wool damask, silk brocade, or rich velvet fabrics.

Authentic period examples exhibit hand-carved decorative elements such as acanthus leaf motifs on cabriole knees, hand-cut mortise and tenon joinery, and natural shrinkage or oxidisation on unpolished interior framework.

A Gainsborough chair functions well as a focal accent in a contemporary study, home library, or formal living room. Placing the structured silhouette alongside streamlined modern tables creates a balanced contrast between historic craftsmanship and minimalist modern design.

The mahogany timber should be dusted regularly with a soft cloth and conditioned periodically using natural beeswax polish to protect the patina. Upholstered sections require light vacuuming with a brush attachment and shielding from direct sunlight to prevent colour fading.
