This Georgian style Gainsborough armchair dates from the late 19th century, specifically around 1890, and stands on straight square legs joined by stretcher rails. The wooden framework comprises mahogany with a warm brown timber colour, supporting olive green leather upholstery secured along the seat border with individual brass studs. Curved mahogany armrests exhibit carved rosette motifs at the terminals above fluted supports, complementing the serpentine crest rail of the high upholstered back. The chair measures 99 cm high, 71 cm wide, and 74 cm deep overall. Placed in a traditional study, home office, or reading corner, this armchair provides comfortable seating at a desk or alongside a fireplace while adding period character to domestic spaces.

A Gainsborough chair is a wide, high-backed upholstered armchair with open carved wooden arms, named after the 18th-century artist Thomas Gainsborough who frequently depicted them in portraits.

Traditional Gainsborough chairs are constructed with solid mahogany frames, hand-stitched leather or woven tapestry upholstery, and finished with brass studding along the aprons.

Authentic period examples feature mortise-and-tenon frame joinery, hand-carved rosette or acanthus leaf arm terminal decorations, natural patination on the timber, and hand-cut brass tacks.

Place the chair as a focal statement in a contemporary home office, reading corner, or study alongside modern minimalist shelving and neutral-toned soft furnishings.

Dust the timber with a microfiber cloth, apply beeswax to the mahogany annually, and treat the leather with a specialist conditioner to prevent cracking, keeping it away from direct heat sources.
