This late nineteenth-century French Rococo Revival wall mirror belongs to the late 19th century period, dating around 1890. The piece takes the form of a rectangular wall mirror constructed from giltwood and glass, finished in a gold colour with original gold leaf gilding. The surface displays elaborate pierced scrollwork framing, acanthus leaf cresting, and classical rocaille carvings. The top section showcases an intricate scrollwork pediment holding the original cresting, and the reverse retains the original backboards alongside visible signs of age to the gilt surface. The mirror measures 110 cm in height by 72 cm in width. In a contemporary home interior, this French chateau style mirror finds placement above the mantel in a living room, drawing room, or hallway. The ornate gilded frame functions well as a decorative focal point on a chimney breast or feature wall, reflecting light and adding traditional character to the surrounding space.

French giltwood mirrors from this period often draw inspiration from Louis XV and Rococo design movements, featuring carved timber frames decorated with gold leaf, ornate scrollwork, acanthus leaves, and prominent cresting pediments.

These mirrors were constructed using hand-carved softwoods or hardwoods coated with chalk-based gesso, red clay bole, and thin gold leaf gilding over mirrored glass plates.

Authentic period pieces often feature hand-carved wooden joinery on the reverse, original red clay bole visible where gold leaf has worn away over time, and natural tarnishing or light oxidation on the mirrored glass.

A gilded wall mirror is frequently positioned above a fireplace mantel, sideboard, or entryway console table to provide visual height, reflect light, and introduce classic ornamentation into modern or eclectic interiors.

Giltwood frames should be dusted gently using a dry, soft-bristled brush or microfibre cloth, avoiding water and chemical cleaners which dissolve gold leaf and deteriorate the underlying gesso surface.
