This pair of French walnut open armchairs dates to around 1880 in the Louis XV Revival style. The dark frames are picked out with gold details and feature oval medallion backrests with ribbon cresting, carved scrollwork, padded arm cuffs, cabriole legs, and castors to the front legs. The chairs are upholstered in a bronze brocade silk featuring gold, dark brown, pink, and blue floral motifs. Dimensions are 97 cm high, 62 cm wide, and 72 cm deep, with a seat height of 41 cm. Suitable for use in a living room, study, or drawing room, these armchairs provide comfortable seating while adding a traditional decorative element to an interior space. The solid construction and classic upholstery suit period properties as well as eclectic modern interiors.

French Louis XV Revival armchairs, produced primarily during the late 19th century, feature asymmetrical curves, serpentine seat rails, cabriole legs, and carved floral motifs. Unlike closed-side bergeres, these open armchairs, or fauteuils, maintain exposed space between the armrests and the seat cushion.

These seating pieces were typically carved from solid hardwoods such as walnut, beechwood, or mahogany. Frames were frequently stained dark, parcel-gilded, or lacquered, with upholsterers utilising traditional materials including horsehair padding, steel coil springs, and silk damask or brocade textiles.

Authentic period armchairs display hand-carved details with subtle variations, traditional wooden dowel and mortise-and-tenon joinery, and natural age wear on hand-touched areas like the arm cuffs and knee carvings. The undersides of the frames often show hand-sawn timber marks and webbed upholstery construction.

Designers often place a pair of French open armchairs opposite a neutral modern sofa or beside a window to create balance. The combination of intricate wood carvings and patterned silk provides visual contrast within minimalist, traditional, or eclectic room schemes.

Walnut frames require periodic dusting with a soft, lint-free cloth and an annual application of clear beeswax to preserve the wood finish. Silk brocade upholstery should be kept out of direct sunlight to prevent fibre degradation and cleaned exclusively using low-suction vacuum attachments or professional dry conservation methods.
