This French Rococo armchair dates from the eighteenth century, specifically around 1770. It is constructed from warm brown walnut with an extra wide seat upholstered in olive green velvet, finished with a neat row of brass stud trim along the lower seat rail and padded armrests. The piece has cabriole legs and hand-carved cresting on the wooden frame, along with visible signs of age and wear. Measuring 98 cm high, 68 cm wide, and 70 cm deep, the chair is solid and comfortable. In a contemporary home, this antique seating provides a distinct period accent for a living room, bedroom, or study. It functions well as a reading chair or an occasional seat, bringing traditional eighteenth-century design and craftsmanship into an interior space.

An 18th-century French Rococo armchair, often referred to as a fauteuil, features an openwork carved wooden frame, sinuous curves, cabriole legs, and decorative motif carvings along the cresting rail and apron.

Cabinetmakers predominantly utilised native hardwoods such as walnut, beech, or fruitwood for the hand-carved frames, paired with traditional webbed construction, horsehair padding, and textile upholstery secured with brass studs.

Authentic period chairs display evidence of hand-planed joinery, wooden peg construction, natural patination on carved surfaces, and subtle asymmetrical carved detailing typical of hand craftsmanship from the era.

Position a period walnut armchair as a standalone accent piece alongside contemporary upholstery or within a reading corner to create visual contrast between carved wood textures and minimalist architectural lines.

Maintain the timber frame by applying natural beeswax polish along the grain, keep the chair away from direct heat sources to prevent timber shrinkage, and gently vacuum the upholstery using a soft brush attachment.
