Antique William IV Mahogany Dressing Table Mirror Carved Scroll Supports C.1830

19th century
For Sale by MebleinUK
Description

This impressive antique mirror features an elegant arched rectangular mirror frame, supported by two wonderfully shaped and carved upright supports incorporating distinctive scrollwork and decorative foliate details.

The beautifully figured mahogany and rich reddish-brown tones give the piece a particularly attractive appearance, while the substantial architectural base and elaborate carved decoration reflect the elegance and craftsmanship of the early Victorian period.

The mirror is mounted between two decorative supports, allowing it to be adjusted to a suitable viewing angle.

A particularly interesting feature is the beautifully constructed base, incorporating two concealed side drawers and a central hinged storage compartment with a shaped front and keyhole. These practical compartments would originally have been used for storing jewellery, personal accessories and dressing table essentials.

The mirror is presented in very good antique condition for its age, retaining its beautiful appearance and decorative character. There are various age-related marks, scratches, areas of wear, minor imperfections and variations to the wood finish, consistent with a piece approaching 200 years old. These contribute to its authentic antique patina.

An antique William IV dressing table mirror dating from c.1830, executed in solid mahogany with a warm reddish-brown colour. The design incorporates an arched rectangular glass frame set between two carved scroll upright supports, a stepped plinth base with scroll feet, and a central hinged compartment fitted with a keyhole. Visible details include deeply figured timber grain, decorative foliate scrollwork, and various age-related marks and surface wear across the polished wood finish. Measuring 84 cm high, 66 cm wide, and 30 cm deep, the piece works well placed on a bedroom chest of drawers or a living room sideboard top for everyday use.

William IV period mirrors, dating roughly from 1830 to 1837, bridge the transition between Regency elegance and Victorian weight. They typically feature heavy scrollwork, carved lotus or acanthus leaves, architectural pedestals, and flame mahogany veneers.

Mirrors from this era were primarily crafted using solid mahogany or mahogany veneers over pine core structures. The mirror plates utilised mercury-amalgam glass silvering, secured on swivel pivot mechanisms mounted to carved wooden supports.

Authentic period pieces exhibit hand-cut dovetail joints on drawers or plinth bases, secondary timbers like pine or oak on rear panels, and signs of mercury silvering degradation on the glass plate. Upright supports often showcase hand-carved scroll detailing rather than modern machine moulding.

A period dressing mirror can be styled atop a minimalist hallway console table, a modern chest of drawers, or a bedroom vanity unit. The warm timber tones provide visual balance and historical texture against clean, contemporary interior schemes.

Timber elements should be cleaned using a dry soft cloth and polished periodically with natural beeswax to maintain the finish. Mirror glass requires non-ammonia cleaner applied directly to a microfibre cloth rather than sprayed onto the frame to prevent moisture damage.
