This Victorian dressing table mirror dates from the mid 19th century, around 1860, and is fashioned from warm brown mahogany and clear glass with brass fittings. The piece takes the form of an arched mirror plate held within a matching frame, supported by carved scroll uprights that allow the angle of the glass to be adjusted. These uprights rise from a solid wooden plinth base resting on four small turned feet, complemented by subtle curved mouldings around the base edge. The old mirror glass remains clear and free of dark blemishes, showing characteristic age while retaining its reflective quality. Measuring 77 cm high, 59 cm wide and 27 cm deep, this mirror sits comfortably atop a chest of drawers, sideboard or dressing table in a bedroom, dressing room or hallway. It suits traditional English Country House interiors, adding period character as a functional tabletop accessory.

Originating in the late 17th century and reaching peak popularity during the Georgian and Victorian eras, toilet mirrors were designed as tabletop accessories for dressing tables or chests of drawers to assist with personal grooming and attire.

Victorian toilet mirrors were typically constructed from solid hardwoods such as mahogany, walnut, or rosewood, accompanied by mercury-backed glass plate mirrors and brass friction knobs or swivel pins.

Authentic period examples often display hand-carved scroll supports, original brass swivel mechanisms, minor silvering oxidation (foxing) on the glass, and hand-planed or secondary pine timbers on the back panel.

Place the mirror on top of a bedroom chest of drawers, a hallway console table, or a dressing table to act as a functional focal point that reflects natural light.

Dust the wooden frame regularly with a soft, lint-free cloth and apply beeswax periodically along the grain. Clean the mirror plate with a lightly dampened microfiber cloth, avoiding liquid contact with the wooden frame or silvered backing.
