This 19th century Georgian dressing table mirror is constructed from mahogany with boxwood inlay, brass hardware, and glass. The warm brown timber is finished with satinwood stringing on the oval swing frame and the bowfront base, which contains three small drawers fitted with round brass knobs and a central keyhole escutcheon. The mirror pivots between curved uprights, and the entire assembly stands on shaped bracket feet. Measuring 57 cm high, 57 cm wide, and 23 cm deep, this mirror fits well on top of a sideboard in a living room, hallway, or dining room. It suits traditional country house interiors as a decorative tabletop piece.

FAQs

A Georgian toilet mirror, also known as a dressing glass, is a freestanding tabletop swing mirror popularised during the eighteenth century. Mounted above a box base with small drawers, these mirrors were constructed to sit atop a dressing table or chest of drawers for daily grooming.

Georgian dressing mirrors were predominantly crafted from dense Cuban or West Indian mahogany, frequently accented with fine boxwood or satinwood stringing and crossbanded borders. The internal drawer linings were typically made of oak or pine, fitted with small brass knobs, turned supports, and brass escutcheon plates.

Authentic Georgian examples feature hand-cut dovetail joints on the drawer construction, original brass turning thumbscrews on the upright supports, and evidence of hand-planed timber on the backboards. The mirror glass may exhibit faint foxing, subtle distortion, and hand-bevelled edges consistent with period glassmaking techniques.

Position the mirror atop a minimalist sideboard or chest of drawers to create an interesting visual contrast between traditional woodwork and contemporary lines. It can also serve as a functional accent piece on a hallway console or within a modern dressing area.

Keep the timber frame dusted with a dry cotton cloth and apply beeswax periodically to preserve the surface finish and natural patina. Avoid applying chemical liquid cleaners directly onto the mirror, spraying instead onto a microfibre cloth to prevent liquid from seeping behind the wooden slip.
