Mid-19th century French gilt mirrors are defined by ornate carved wooden frames finished with gold leaf over gesso. They frequently feature Rococo Revival elements such as pierced scrollwork, acanthus leaf motifs, and decorative crestings.

Frames were carved from hardwoods or softwood timber, coated with layers of gesso plaster, and sealed with a clay base called bole. Gold leaf was then applied using water gilding or oil gilding techniques before being burnished with an agate stone.

Authentic period mirrors feature timber backboards, evidence of red or yellow bole showing through worn areas of gilding, hand-carved frame joinery, and natural age-related oxidisation or gentle dark specks on the original mirror glass.

A carved gilt mirror creates visual interest when positioned above a minimalist fireplace mantel, mounted above a dining room sideboard, or hung in an entrance hall to reflect light and expand the sense of space.

Dust the frame regularly using a dry, soft-bristled brush or microfiber cloth. Avoid water, spray cleaners, or chemical polishes, as moisture can dissolve the gesso substrate and loosen the delicate gold leaf.
