Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Nineteenth-century French gilded mirrors are characterised by structured geometric or arched frames adorned with classical motifs such as reeding, beadwork, floral rosettes, and acanthus crestings. Popular during the Louis Philippe and Napoleon III eras, these mirrors feature refined gilding over timber and plaster gesso to bounce natural light around formal rooms.

These mirrors were constructed using a hand-carved soft timber frame, such as pine or lime wood, coated with layers of chalky plaster gesso. Thin sheets of gold leaf were applied over a coloured clay base known as bole, while the central reflection pane was crafted from hand-blown glass silvered with mercury or tin amalgam.

Authentic period pieces show evidence of hand craftsmanship, including joint seams in the timber frame, dark red or yellow bole clay showing through areas where the gold leaf has worn away, and slight surface irregularities or silvering oxidation (foxing) on the glass pane. Original backboards are typically composed of thick, rough-sawn pine planks.

Position the mirror centrally above a living room fireplace mantelpiece, a hallway console table, or a bedroom chest of drawers. The warm metallic gilding provides contrast against dark painted walls or architectural panelling while visually expanding smaller modern spaces.

Dust the frame regularly using a soft, dry camel-hair brush or microfibre duster. Avoid applying water, liquid cleaners, or household polishes directly to the frame, as moisture dissolves delicate gesso and degrades antique gold leafing.
