This nineteenth-century wall mirror belongs to the French Chateau style and dates from 1880. The large cartouche-shaped object comprises an ornate giltwood and gesso frame with a beaded moulding, an arched profile, and shaped shoulders enclosing an original glass plate with a brilliant gold finish. Metal hanging brackets project visibly from the sides of the frame against the backing, whilst the carved surface displays subtle textural variations typical of nineteenth-century gilding. The wall mirror measures 117 cm high, 97 cm wide, and 4 cm deep. Positioned in a contemporary home, this piece works particularly well above a mantelpiece in a living room, drawing room, or entrance hall to reflect natural light and create a sense of scale. The warm gold tone pairs easily with traditional or eclectic interior schemes, mounted securely on a prominent wall space where the ornate silhouette and original glass remain fully visible from any angle.

During the 19th century, gilt mirrors were prominent decorative features in formal reception rooms, created using water-gilding techniques over hand-carved wood and gesso to reflect light before electric illumination became widespread.

These frames were typically crafted from softwood or lime wood, covered with layers of gesso plaster, and finished with fine leaf gold over red or yellow bole clay before insertion of silvered glass plate.

Authentic pieces exhibit visible signs of age such as natural wear revealing the underlying gesso or bole, hand-carved backboard construction, and faint foxing or slight distortion in the original plate glass.

Placing a gilt mirror above a fireplace mantelpiece, console table, or hallway sideboard creates a strong focal point that draws light and provides visual contrast within contemporary decor schemes.

Dust the gilded frame gently with a soft dry brush, avoiding water or chemical cleaners which dissolve original water-gilding, and wipe the glass carefully with a dry microfibre cloth.
