This mid-19th century French convex wall mirror dates from circa 1860 and brings classical detailing to an interior. The square giltwood and gesso frame has a stepped profile, shell spandrels, an egg and dart moulding, and a cabochon border around the central round convex glass plate. The gold finish shows surface wear and gentle patination consistent with age. Within a home today, this piece hangs suitably above a mantelpiece or as a focal point in a hallway or reception room. Measuring 71 cm high by 71 cm wide with an 8 cm depth, the mirror provides substantial presence without overwhelming wall space. The decorative corners feature textured stippling and relief carving that contrast with the smooth gilded mouldings and the curved glass surface. This wall mirror works well in traditional French chateau inspired settings or alongside eclectic antiques.

Originating in 18th and 19th century European interiors, a French convex gilt mirror features a outward-curved glass lens set within a carved wood and gesso frame finished in gold leaf, designed to capture and reflect an entire rooms perspective.

Frames were typically constructed from hand-carved pine, lime, or walnut, coated with layers of gesso plaster, and finished using water-gilding techniques with thin gold leaf, while the mirror plate comprised silvered convex glass.

Authentic period pieces feature evidence of hand-carved wood joinery under the gesso, subtle wear showing red or grey clay bole base layers beneath the gold leaf, and light foxing or distortion within the original convex glass plate.

Position a convex gilt mirror above a fireplace mantelpiece, console table, or entryway bench to act as a central anchor, where its curved glass reflects light across contemporary furniture layouts.

Dust the carved frame gently using a soft, dry camel-hair brush, avoiding liquid cleaners or solvents that dissolve gesso and gold leaf, and clean the convex glass using a lightly dampened microfiber cloth.
