This Edwardian French pier glass mirror embodies the French Rococo Revival style, constructed from giltwood and gesso with a reflective glass plate. The piece has a gold colour and a gilt finish, decorated with a carved cresting, scrollwork, an ornate carved shell motif crest, decorative scrollwork frame, and acanthus leaf detail, showing good overall condition. Measuring 90 cm high and 45 cm wide, the mirror fits a narrow wall space in a home today. The frame displays visible craftsmanship through high-relief carved crests at the top and bottom, serpentine scrolling sides, and textured surface details along the borders. This wall-hung mirror brings decorative French Chateau character to a hallway, landing, or living room wall.

A pier glass mirror is a tall, narrow wall mirror originally designed to hang on the masonry pier between windows in eighteenth and nineteenth-century architecture. French examples typically feature elaborate giltwood framing, decorative cresting, and classical motifs intended to enhance light reflection.

These mirrors were constructed using wooden frames covered in gesso, a plaster-like compound carved with decorative details. The surface was finished with thin sheets of gold leaf applied through water gilding or oil gilding, while the reflective glass was back-coated with mercury or silver.

Authentic pieces from around 1910 show light wear to the gilt surface, exposing red or grey clay bole underneath, along with dark spotting or foxing on the silvered glass plate. The reverse typically features hand-cut wooden backing boards and original mounting hardware.

Positioning a pier glass mirror above a hallway console table or between two windows creates a focal point and draws natural light into the space. The metallic tone complements contemporary neutral wall palettes while introducing architectural height.

Giltwood frames should be dusted regularly with a soft, dry brush to prevent dirt buildup. Avoid liquid cleaners, damp cloths, or commercial polishes, as moisture can dissolve the delicate gesso ground and strip away the gold leaf layer.
