This nineteenth-century French Provincial trumeau mirror brings classic French Chateau style to an interior, designed for placement above the mantel. The piece consists of a painted timber frame in sage green with real gilt highlights, a moulded cornice, and a beaded gilt inner border framing two distressed mercury glass plates with a split mirror plate design. The old olive green painted frame shows a heavily foxed surface and an original backboard. In practical terms, the mirror stands 135.5 cm high and 66 cm wide. In a home today, this wall mirror works well above a fireplace mantel or as a focal point in a living room, hallway, or bedroom to reflect light and add architectural interest. The neutral sage and gold tones complement various room palettes while the weathered glass introduces authentic texture and antique character to the space.

Originating in 18th-century France, a trumeau mirror was originally constructed to fit into the panelling between windows or set directly above a mantelpiece. These pieces often combined a mirror plate with an upper painted canvas panel or a secondary glass section within a unified frame structure.

Traditional French trumeau mirrors feature wooden backings and frames finished with water-gilding, oil-gilding, or milk paint. The reflective surfaces historically utilised genuine mercury glass plates created via a silver-tin amalgam process.

Authentic mercury glass displays characteristic dark sparkling spots, desilvered patches, and an uneven, slightly shimmering reflection caused by the gradual oxidisation of the metallic backing over time, particularly towards the lower edge of the plate.

A trumeau mirror is frequently placed above a fireplace mantel, positioned atop a dining room sideboard, or leaned vertically against a wall to add verticality, light reflection, and structural character to contemporary living spaces.

Clean the glass surface gently with a lint-free cloth lightly dampened with distilled water, avoiding liquid contact with the frame seams or back. Dust painted and gilded woodwork strictly with a soft dry brush to prevent lifting delicate gilt or flake paint finishes.
