Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

French Baroque mirrors feature dramatic symmetry, bold relief carvings, and elaborate decorative motifs such as acanthus leaves, crests, and floral medallions. Developed during the 17th century, these designs emphasized grand proportions, dynamic curves, and rich gold leaf finishes intended to reflect candlelight across opulent rooms.

Authentic period frames were carved from solid wood, often lime or pine, coated with gesso, and finished using water gilding with gold leaf applied over a clay bole background. Mirror plates were made from blown glass coated with a tin-mercury amalgam, resulting in slight surface distortions and subtle oxidisation.

Authentic period mirrors display signs of age, such as visible red or grey clay bole under worn gilding, hand-carving marks on the frames reverse, and minor spotting or foxing within the glass plate. Modern reproductions typically feature molded resin rather than carved wood and uniform, machine-applied gold paint.

A carved gilded mirror serves as a focal point when placed above a minimalist sideboard, console table, or fireplace mantel. Contrast the intricate scrollwork of the frame against plain painted walls or dark wallpaper to highlight its detailed architectural silhouettes.

Dust giltwood frames gently using a dry, soft-bristled brush, avoiding water or liquid cleaners that can dissolve historic water gilding. Clean the glass plate separately using a soft cloth dampened with water, taking care not to let moisture seep into the frame jointing or behind the glass.
