1900 - 1920
For Sale by ActFurniture LTD
Description

Antique early 20th century Arts & Crafts Morris reclining armchair in oak, a handsome and comfortable piece of good quality, showcasing fine craftsmanship and a wonderfully practical design.

The adjustable back reclines while the seat slides forward, taking the chair from an upright reading position to a relaxed, almost flat lounging position. It is upholstered in a warm floral tapestry fabric, with a deep buttoned back cushion and a generous sprung seat.

The broad, shaped arms rest on bobbin turned front supports with turned spindles to the sides, and the chair stands on turned front legs ending in bun feet, with gently splayed rear legs.

The oak displays a lovely figured grain and a warm, mellow colour with a pleasing patina built up over many years.

This early 20th century Arts & Crafts Morris armchair is made from oak with a warm medium brown finish and a figured grain. The adjustable reclining back and sliding seat allow movement from an upright position to a relaxed one. It is upholstered in terracotta floral tapestry fabric with a deep buttoned back cushion and a sprung seat. Broad shaped armrests sit on bobbin-turned front supports, accompanied by vertical side spindles, while turned front legs end in bun feet alongside splayed rear legs. The dimensions measure 88 cm high, 70 cm wide, and 47 cm deep. In a home today, it functions as a practical seating option for a living room, study, library, or reading corner. The timber displays a mellow tone with a visible patina built up over time.

Designed originally in the mid-19th century by William Morriss firm, the Morris chair is a style of reclining armchair featuring an adjustable backrest, wide armrests, and unadorned wooden construction characteristic of the Arts and Crafts movement.

These armchairs are typically constructed from solid hardwoods such as oak, ash, or beech, often joined using traditional mortise and tenon joinery, paired with woven upholstery, leather, or patterned tapestry fabrics.

Authentic examples typically feature heavy wooden frames, exposed joinery, wide armrests, a wooden or brass peg adjustment mechanism behind the backrest, and construction consistent with late 19th or early 20th-century methods.

Position the armchair alongside modern minimalist side tables or neutral soft furnishings to create a focal point that highlights the natural grain and timber tones of the piece.

Keep the timber frame dusted with a soft cloth and apply beeswax polish periodically to nourish the wood finish, while keeping upholstery away from direct sunlight to prevent fabric fading.
