This large antique French mirror originates from the nineteenth century in the Louis Philippe style, measuring 140 cm high, 86 cm wide, and 5 cm deep. The frame is constructed from carved wood and gesso with a painted distressed grey finish, displaying a rounded top, beaded inner moulding, and foliate corner embellishments. The original mercury glass plate is very distressed and foxed with noticeable age spots and marks, held by original backboards. In a contemporary interior, the mirror suits placement above a mantelpiece in a living room, dining room, or bedroom to create a French chateau aesthetic. The weathered finish and textured surface complement traditional and transitional decorative schemes, reflecting natural light while serving as a statement wall hanging.

Originating in France during the reign of King Louis Philippe (18301848), these mirrors are characterised by a rectangular frame with soft, rounded upper corners and a flat bottom edge. They frequently feature clean lines, beaded inner mouldings, and subtle foliate or crest details.

Frames were typically constructed from pine or hardwood, coated with gesso (a mixture of plaster and glue), and finished with gold leaf, silver leaf, or paint. The glass was silvered using mercury or silver nitrate solutions, which naturally oxidise over time.

Authentic pieces feature heavy solid wood backboards, traditional joinery, and natural foxing or dark specks on the mercury-silvered glass mirror plate. The upper corners should be smoothly rounded, and the back should show historical wear rather than modern plywood.

These mirrors are frequently placed above a fireplace mantel or positioned atop a dining room sideboard to add vertical height and light. They can also be leaned against a main wall in an entryway or bedroom to create an effortless focal point.

Clean the frame using only a dry, soft microfibre cloth or delicate feather duster to avoid chipping fragile gesso or paint. Spray glass cleaner directly onto a cloth rather than the mirror itself to prevent moisture from seeping behind the frame and damaging the silvering.
