Strictly Vetted Dealers

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.

Secure Transit

Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.

The Sustainable Choice

Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

This large Victorian wall mirror is an oval piece finished in a gold giltwood and gesso frame. The glass has a bevelled edge, accompanied by a reeded frame pattern and crossed ribbon decorative accents at four distinct points around the perimeter. Signs of age and wear include old repairs to the gesso ribbon detailing, slight foxing in places, and a few minor scratches on the glass and frame. The frame measures 120 cm in height, 65 cm in width, and 4 cm in depth. Suitable for domestic placement, this wall mirror functions well above a mantel over a fireplace, or as a functional piece in a bedroom or hallway. The vertical oval orientation and traditional gilded finish suit classical interior schemes.

FAQs

Victorian oval gilt mirrors feature elliptical wooden frames embellished with gesso mouldings and finished with gold leaf. They frequently incorporate classical Neoclassical motifs such as reeded borders, ribbon ties, and floral motifs popular during the nineteenth century.

Frames were typically constructed from carved timber covered with gesso, a plaster-like compound used to create smooth textures or detailed relief mouldings. A clay-based bole was applied prior to lay down thin sheets of gold leaf, which were then burnished.

Authentic period pieces show age-related wear, including slight cracking or crazing in the gesso, exposure of the underlying reddish bole clay beneath worn gilding, and original wooden backings secured with square-headed nails or wooden pegs.

A large oval gilt mirror works effectively as a focal point positioned above a fireplace mantelpiece, dining room sideboard, or hallway console table. The curved silhouette softens angular modern architectural lines while reflecting light.

Gilded wood should be dusted gently using a soft, dry camel-hair brush or microfibre cloth. Avoid using water, damp cloths, or liquid cleaning solvents on the frame, as moisture damages the gesso layer beneath the gold leaf.
