These Qing Dynasty armchair seating items belong to the gentleman's library category and date from 1880, originating from China. Constructed from dark elm with remnants of an original red stain, they take the form of traditional yoke back crest rail seating with carved splat medallions, curved armrests, and box stretchers with footrests. The timber shows natural warmth where the red stain has rubbed out, and the central splats display relief carvings of mythical figures or bats. Each armchair measures 101 cm high, 61 cm wide, and 48 cm deep, providing comfortable seating in original condition. Such armchairs function effectively as statement accent seating within a home study, library, or living room setting today, pairing well with traditional or eclectic interior schemes. Their architectural wooden construction and historic Chinese styling bring character and practical utility to any interior space while maintaining their authentic period aesthetic.

Yoke-back armchairs, historically known as Guanmaoyi, originated in classical Chinese furniture design and achieved widespread popularity during the Ming and Qing dynasties. The distinctive crest rail design was shaped to resemble the official winged hats worn by imperial bureaucrats.

These armchairs were crafted using indigenous woods including elm (yumu), walnut, and tropical hardwoods. Construction relied entirely on sophisticated mortise-and-tenon joinery, securing joints without the use of metal nails or modern adhesives.

Authentic period examples exhibit hand-carved mortise-and-tenon joints, natural wear along the lower front footrest stretcher, and subtle timber shrinkage around the seat panel frame. Original hand-carved relief motifs on the back splat and remnants of dark lacquer also indicate age.

Pairs of Chinese armchairs function well as symmetrical accent seating when positioned alongside a console table, within a wide entrance hall, or flanking a focal fireplace. Their geometric lines create an effective visual balance alongside contemporary minimalist furnishings.

Elm furniture requires placement away from direct heat sources and radiators to prevent wood movement or splitting. Maintenance involves regular dusting with a dry, lint-free cloth and occasional light application of natural beeswax polish to protect the timber surface.
