Windsor Slat Back Armchair in Beech, Ash & Alder C1890

19th century
Description

A good Windsor slat back armchair in beech with ash and beech under arm turnings, ash under frame and legs, with seat in alder. The use of alder for the seat suggest this chair comes from the Northern Windsor chair making tradition (probably Yorkshire) and the ‘squared off’ corners to the rear edge the seat are a sign of quality and earlier manufacture than other chairs of similar style. Firm and original condition and finish, c1890.

This Victorian country Windsor armchair dates from around 1890 and is constructed from beech, ash, and alder in a warm brown timber finish. The seat features squared-off corners to the rear edge, a curved slat back rest, shaped armrests, and turned arm supports, legs, and H-stretcher. The chair is in a firm and original condition with visible wood grain and patination across the surfaces, and displays slender vertical back slats capped by a gently arched top rail. The chair measures 113 cm high, 61 cm wide, and 56 cm deep. In a modern home, this armchair serves as a practical seating option around a dining table, in a study, or as a standalone accent piece in a living room, hallway, or bedroom. Its traditional rustic farmhouse design fits well in both period and contemporary interior schemes where wooden seating adds warmth and texture.

A Windsor slat back armchair is a traditional British regional chair featuring vertical wooden back slats set into a curved crest rail, a solid shaped seat, turned legs, and integrated armrests socketed directly into the seat.

Windsor chairs were historically crafted using a combination of regional hardwoods, such as beech or ash for turned legs, spindles, and slats, with elm or alder chosen for the shaped seat panel.

Authentic late nineteenth-century examples display wedge-tenon joinery securing the legs through the seat board, hand-turned stretchers, and natural wear patterns on the front legs and stretchers.

A Windsor armchair functions effectively as an accent chair in an entryway, a fireside seat in a living space, or a carver chair positioned at the head of a dining table.

Regular maintenance involves dusting with a clean cloth, applying a neutral beeswax polish along the wood grain annually, and keeping the item away from direct radiators to prevent timber splitting.
