Why Sellingantiques dated this piece to THE 1920s:
Turnings on the legs and stretchers: regular early twentieth-century lathe work.
Carved scrollwork on the front stretchers: crisp work in the Jacobean revival taste.
Medullary rays across the arms: quarter-sawn oak cut to show decorative flecks.
Even stained finish: interwar colouring with light rubbing on the edges.

This set of eight Jacobean style oak dining chairs originates from 1920 and follows the Jacobean Revival tradition. The frames comprise medium brown timber with turned legs, carved scroll stretchers, and high arched backrests, alongside two carver chairs fitted with scroll armrests. Both the seats and the tall backrests are upholstered in cream fabric patterned with pink floral and leaf motifs. The singles measure 117 cm high, 49 cm wide, and 53 cm deep, while the carvers measure 120 cm high, 56 cm wide, and 57 cm deep. Suitable for use around a formal dining table in a large dining room or country house setting, these chairs provide seating for eight guests. The solid oak construction and upholstered padding offer sturdy support during meals and gatherings. The combination of turned woodwork and patterned upholstery creates a traditional aesthetic that suits period interiors.

Jacobean style furniture originated in 17th-century England and is characterised by robust oak construction, turned legs, and elaborate wood carvings. Revival pieces from the late 19th and early 20th centuries replicate these features, offering high padded backrests and decorative scrollwork stretchers.

These chairs are predominantly crafted from solid oak timber, valued for its durability and prominent grain pattern. Construction traditionally incorporates mortise and tenon joinery, turned front legs, carved stretchers, and upholstered textile panels.

Look for crisp hand-carved detailing, dark natural surface patination on the oak, and traditional mortise and tenon joinery. Revival pieces often feature uniform turned front legs, carved apron stretchers, and fully padded backs rather than plain wooden splats.

Positioning a set of carved oak chairs around a minimalist modern dining table creates an engaging stylistic contrast. The rich wood tones and patterned fabric balance contemporary interior lines with historical texture.

Dust the timber elements regularly with a soft cloth and apply a natural beeswax polish annually to protect the oak. Vacuum the fabric upholstery using a soft brush attachment to prevent dust from settling into the textile weave.
