Antique Set Of Farthingale Chairs C1640-60

£995    $1,348    €1,172
This is a Rare set of Antique Farthingale Chairs c1640-60. Made of Oak they are a Harlequin set so two pairs. I have pictured them as pairs in front of each other on the right and left. Originally invented by Lord Farthingale for himself to sit on instead of Benches and hard seat. These are the first design to have stuffed over seats. They are in pairs as you would expect for the Master and Mistress of the house. A very rare set of frames. It is also very logical why there are two pairs. When the son and his wife took control of the family estate new furniture was always required, hence a second pair.

When this piece was made the South Sea Bubble had not yet collapsed, Bonnie Prince Charlie had not landed in Scotland, Slavery was legal and we had not lost the American Colonies.
