This set of four 17th-century style oak dining chairs dates from 1920, representing good quality facsimiles of South Yorkshire joined backstools. Each chair displays tall decorative backrests with an arched top carved with flowers and foliage over three arches, supported on slim turned spindles and a carved stretcher. The uprights feature slightly tapering rear stiles topped with scrolling finials, framing single piece board seats with moulded edges. Turned and block front legs connect via turned and tapering front stretchers, accompanied by straight side and rear stretchers. Finished in a dark brown timber tone with a waxed polish, these pieces are suited for use around a dining table in a traditional interior. The dimensions are 119.5 cm high, 49.5 cm wide, and 49.5 cm deep, with a seat height of 47 cm.

Chairs designed in the 17th-century style typically feature solid oak construction, low-relief wood carving, arcaded back panels or spindles, and turned legs joined by low stretchers.

Traditional oak chairs from this era utilize solid timber joined with mortise and tenon joints, secured with wooden pegs. Back panels often incorporate lathe-turned spindles and hand-carved floral or geometric crest rails.

Authentic period examples demonstrate irregular hand-planed surfaces, hand-cut joinery, and natural wear patterns on foot stretchers. Later 19th and 20th-century revivals feature precise machine tool marks, modern adhesives, and uniform proportions.

These dark oak chairs provide visual weight and historic texture when paired with minimalist timber dining tables or modern plaster backdrops in eclectic and contemporary schemes.

Dusting regularly with a soft cloth and applying a beeswax polish annually helps maintain the patina. Timber should be kept away from direct heat sources and excessive moisture to prevent warping or splitting.
